Charleston (45 miles outside town), Lake Mead National Recreation Area (30 minutes to the east), the Grand Canyon lies about 4 hours to the east, and numerous spectacular national parks in southern Utah (Bryce, Zion, Moab), about 3 hours away.

The Las Vegas Strip
The Strip itself consists of the four miles of Las Vegas Boulevard between the Sahara and Mandalay Bay, and thus now reaches as far south as McCarran Airport.  Almost every building along the way is a casino, each frantically clamoring for the attention of the tourists who throng the road day and night. For the sake of convenience, it's often loosely divided into the South Strip, from Mandalay Bay up to the MGM Grand and New York-New York; the Central Strip, which includes Bellagio, Caesars Palace and the Venetian; and the North Strip, from the Stardust to the Sahara to the Stratosphere.

Las Vegas StripWhatever you might expect, downtown Las Vegas is not a bustling area where locals go about their business far from the mayhem of the Strip.  Instead, it too is utterly dominated by casinos. Its centerpiece, the Fremont Street Experience, is an extraordinary architectural conceit, in which four blocks of its main thoroughfare have been roofed over to give it the feel of a theme park rather than a real city.  An unfortunate side effect has been to make the rest of downtown seem even more derelict and menacing than before; it is not an area any visitor should attempt to explore.

Vegas Bargains

Parking
Surprisingly, just about all of the parking in Las Vegas is free.  Just about every hotel, casino, and resort has a gigantic parking garage behind the property that does not charge a price for parking.  The catch here is that most of these parking garages are located behind the properties and can be as much as a block or more off of the strip.  But, free is free!

Additionally, you may find numerous small alleys that lead from the strip to a very nearby parking lot such as the one next to the Travelodge hotel right on the Strip.  Keep your eyes open for these opportune parking spots, scan maps and even look at overhead imagery online.

Valet Parking
Valet parking is normally reserved for the rich and famous.  In Las Vegas, everyone has an opportunity to enjoy the perks of valet parking.  First, it is widely available and even encouraged at most of the big hotels and casinos on the strip.  Because the front entrance is of the hotels are so massive and the valet staff so well may and, it is a very smooth operation.  Second, if you're a guest at any of these hotels, you are likely already paying the nightly "resort fee" that automatically includes daily valet parking.  This means valet parking during your entire stay in that hotel has been paid for and all you are responsible for now is the customary small tip each time you pick up your vehicle.  Using the valet can save you a lot of time, of a hassle of having to walk to the distant parking garage, and lets you live like a high roller!

Want to keep your vehicle close by as you party in a hotel club?  Just increase your tip to the valets to something like $20 and ask them to hold your vehicle nearby - this way you can avoid the sometimes lengthy wait to retrieve your vehicle at the end of the night.

Dining Discounts
When people think of dining in Vegas, they think of the ever present grandiose buffets.  Although you may find some very reasonably priced meals advertised on billboards or in the brochures, much of the buffets and restaurants you come across are overpriced.  However, there are some deals to be had.  Take a trip down to Freemont street for the Freemont Street Experience and you'll find an older part of Vegas with dazzling neon lights and many bargains to try to lure visitors.  The buffets in the hotels and casinos on Freemont street (the old downtown of Las Vegas) are significantly cheaper than the ones on the strip and offer you the same type and selection of food.  Here, you can find buffets for around $10.00.

If you've decided to dine on the Vegas Strip, there are some things to consider that may save you a significant amount of money.  Recently, hotel buffets started offering all day eating passes.  This means for one heavily discounted price, you can eat in the hotel's buffet for three meals.  Prices vary hotel to hotel, we've seen some all-day buffet eating passes advertised for as low as $50.00.  Remember, buffet prices for children are cheaper than adults, and children 4 and under typically eat for free.  This is great for your fickle kids, because you can go up 100 times to find the exact dish they are willing to eat!  Additionally, many hotels have teamed up to offer the all day eating pass and after the opportunity to eat three buffet meals the same day but allow you to choose from buffet restaurants from a handful of different hotels.  This means you could eat breakfast at the Excalibur, lunch at Planet Hollywood, and dinner at the Luxor for one deeply discounted rate.

Want to really save a lot on food?  You'll need a car to drive you there from the strip... but it will be worth it... Casinos off-the-strip that cater to "locals" offer tremendous savings and, not surprisingly, their food is exceptional (some will even admit better than most on-the-strip buffets.)  Monday through Friday, try the Studio B buffet at the M Resort and Casino (south of the Vegas Strip on Vegas Boulevard) - their fantastic breakfast buffet is $9.95 for adults and lunch is only $5 more!  Weekdays and weekends, eat at the Station Casinos including Green Valley Ranch and Red Rock Resort and Casino.

Hotels Bargains
Vegas is one of those towns where you can still find outstanding discounts on hotels.  Regardless of whether you're choosing a high-end hotel like the Bellagio or Aria, or a more discount venue such as Circus Circus or Excalibur, your deeply discounted hotel rates will be in and of the week Sunday through Thursday nights.  Weekend hotel rates usually jump up some times as much as doubling or tripling the price.  However, if you're willing to shop around, you can find a middle of the week hotel on the Strip for as little as $20.00 a night.  Use our handy Las Vegas strip hotel locator to find the most reasonable rates for hotels right on the Las Vegas strip.

Want luxurious opulence at a reasonable price?  Reserve a suite at the Trump Resort and Casino - experience white-glove treatment and exquisite hospitality.  Go ahead and splurge by reserving their Penthouse Suite.
